The Red Sort is a design proposal developed for my university dissertation, reimagining the abandoned Red Sands Army Fort as the UK’s first offshore holiday and entertainment resort. Originally built in the Thames Estuary as part of the country’s coastal defences, the fort now stands unused—yet holds huge potential, surrounded by open sea and stunning views.
The site consists of seven hexagonal platforms, raised on pillars and arranged in a star formation. My design preserves and reinforces the original structures, connecting them via bridges to a central hub. New additions include a helipad, boat access, decking and outdoor areas to support transport, water activities and renewable energy systems.
Four towers are designed to accommodate up to 90 guests, while the others house a spa, a bar/restaurant, and a heritage centre featuring a museum and digital gallery. The concept draws inspiration from prisms and light refraction, using coloured glass and large windows to create vibrant, rainbow-lit spaces, balanced by a clean, minimalist aesthetic.
Powered by wind, wave, and solar energy, the resort is low-impact and sustainable—supporting local tourism, creating jobs, and offering a unique, immersive experience that connects history, nature, and design.
